Saskatchewan Council on Disability Issues

The 12 member Saskatchewan Council on Disability Issues was appointed in 1999 as part of a government wide disability strategy. The Council was established to provide advice to government on disability issues and guidance in the development of the Disability Action Plan. Over the past two years the members of the Council have worked very hard to establish a common understanding and approach to addressing issues that impact the lives of persons with disabilities and their families in Saskatchewan. Saskatchewan's Disability Action Plan is the result of this hard work and dedication.  It is an ambitious and comprehensive plan that outlines elements of a new direction for government to address disability issues. This direction is based on a citizenship approach. For the Council, citizenship refers to the full inclusion of persons with disabilities in the social, economic and political life of our province.

The Council recognizes that the achievement of full citizenship for persons with disabilities is a process that will be only achieved over the long term. The Action Plan identifies a series of directions (Path Forward) and suggested actions (First Steps) that will move toward the vision of full citizenship. These actions represent measures that the Council believes are the most critical to removing barriers to full citizenship and that are attainable in the near future.
