Members of the Advisory Committee

To help ensure that Symposium 2007 reflects the interests and perspectives of the Aboriginal communities in Canada, CCI has established an Advisory Committee comprising members of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis communities across Canada. The members of the Advisory Committee were selected on the basis of their experience and knowledge as a member of their respective community, and for their involvement with the care and interpretation of Aboriginal artifacts.

The Advisory Committee provides advice and information on:

• the overall objectives of Symposium 2007
• the themes in support of the objectives
• the program content and speakers
• potential participants
• format of the Symposium
• sources of funding

Members of the Advisory Committee include:

• Peter Decontie, Elder of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg (Algonquin) community, Maniwaki, Quebec.
• Adam Cooke, graduate of the Aboriginal Training Program in Museum Practices at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, and the Applied Museum Studies program at Algonquin College, Ottawa, Ontario. Adam is from Winona, Ontario. (Youth delegate.)
• Shannon Googoo, Mi’kmawey Debert Administrator, The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq, Truro, Nova Scotia. Shannon is a member of the Mi’kmaq Nation.
• Howard Grant, Executive Director, First Nations Summit, Vancouver, British Columbia. Howard is a member of the Musqueam Band in British Columbia.
• Judy Harris, Acting Museum Director, Woodland Cultural Centre, Brantford, Ontario. Judy is a member of the Cayuga Nation, Six Nations Reserve, Ohsweken, Ontario.
• Leah LaPlante, Vice President, Manitoba Metis Federation Inc. S.W. Region, Brandon, Manitoba, and is from a small Metis community in the Turtle Mountain area of southern Manitoba. Leah is involved in the development of two Metis cultural centres in Manitoba.
• Kathy Nanowin, Assistant Conservator, The Manitoba Museum, Winnipeg, Manitoba . Kathy is a member of the God’s Lake First Nation in northern Manitoba, and of Cree/Ojibway/French heritage.
• Richard Nuna, Manager, Environment, Culture and Conservation, Innu Nation Environment Office, Sheshatshiu, Labrador. Richard is Innu.
• Theresie Tungilik, former member of the Board of Directors of the Inuit Art Foundation, Rankin Inlet, Nunavut. Theresie is Inuk.
• Gilbert Whiteduck, former President of First Nations Confederacy of Cultural Education Centres, former Education Director, Kitigan Zibi Education Council, Maniwaki, Quebec, and Senior Education Advisor with the First Nations Education Council (Quebec). Gilbert is from the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg (Algonquin) community in Maniwaki, Quebec.
• Eldon Yellowhorn, Assistant Professor, Department of Archaeology, Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia. Eldon is a member of the Piikani First Nation in Alberta.
