Search screens and syntax
There are two different search options. The first allows you to choose a document within a specific period of time, while the second lets you search for words, phrases and dates in the database.

First option: Choose a document

The screen for the option Choose a document presents seven fields under two headings, Period and Type of document, where a value can be entered.

Period:
The six fields allow you to choose search dates in the database. The fields are arranged in two rows, the first for the start date and the second for the end date.
  • The two fields in the first column are reserved for the year, which goes from 1759 to 1900. Only one year per field can be entered.
  • The two fields in the second column are for the month. Only one month per field can be chosen at a time.
  • The two fields in the third column are used to enter the day. Only one day per field can be chosen at a time.
By default, the selection covers the period between January 1, 1759 and December 31, 1900, which covers all the documents.

Type of document:
This field allows you to restrict your search by selecting a type of document:
  • All documents
  • Circulars
  • Postal guides
  • Publications.
To initiate a search in the database, click on the Search button.

Second option: Search by word, phrase and date

The screen for the option Search by word, phrase and date is the second option. It presents eight fields under three headings, Search term, Period and Search type, where a value can be entered.

In the first field, reserved for search term(s), you enter a keyword or phrase that you want to search in the database.

The following six fields under the Period heading allow you to choose the start date and end date of the search in the database.
  • The two fields in the first column are reserved for the year, which goes from 1759 to 1900. Only one year per field can be entered at a time.

The last field allows you to restrict your search by selecting a type of document:
  • All documents
  • Circulars
  • Postal guides
  • Publications
