Broadening the Benefits of TradeBroadening the Benefits of Trade
2004-07-30
“No nation,” said Benjamin Franklin, “was ever ruined by trade.” Neither, however, have all nations benefited equally from it. Developing countries in particular are demanding a greater say in making the rules which govern the global trading system. But if more equitable trade rules are to promote economic growth and advance development, then the benefits from trade must be shared across all levels of society. This collection highlights the activities of some of the people involved in broadening the benefits of trade.

In Senegal, pastoralists are tracking their wandering cattle herds using cell phones and Global Positioning Systems. In South Africa, small tourist businesses operating out of the townships are attracting customers from around the world by using the Internet. In Mozambique, forest wardens are using high-frequency radios to stop poaching. Across the African continent, communities are using information and communication technologies (ICTs) for their social and economic development. The articles in this collection present stories of how research is helping to create a “made in Africa” information revolution.

Focus on Medicinal PlantsFocus on Medicinal Plants

Traditional medicine is used the world over — but is particularly relied on in developing countries. Medicinal plants — the world’s oldest known health care products — play a key role in traditional medicine. But these plants are not only used for primary health care: many widely used pharmaceuticals are derived from plants and other natural sources. How can medicinal plants contribute to sustainable livelihoods? What are the limitations and problems associated with the commercial use of medicinal plants? The articles in this collection touch on some of these issues.

The Ecohealth approach to research recognizes that there are inextricable links between humans and their biophysical, social, and economic environments that are reflected in an individual's health. This collection presents a selection of stories of how an ecosystems approach to research is being used to improve health and the environment in countries around the world.

Taking a Closer Look at PovertyTaking a Closer Look at Poverty
2003-01-10
The fight against poverty is fraught with uncertainties. Even the very definition of poverty is elusive: its manifestations and causes vary from country to country; its magnitude fluctuates according to the social and economic context. These are some of the fundamental questions a network of researchers from 12 Asian and African countries has been grappling with.
