You cruise down a narrow canyon on a green liquid highway. The river widens and the cliffs give way to bright hills of purple fireweed. Industrious beavers renovate their lodges with loud smacks of the tail. Bald eagles circle effortlessly high above. The current slows and quiets to a gentle gurgling, but carries you steadily along. There is so much more it wants to show you.
After a long day of paddling, you drift ashore on a small, grassy island. You make camp and throw out a line. A sharp tug responds almost immediately. You lean back forcefully, straining to reel in the feisty grayling thrashing about on your hook. How about that – the river serves up dinner as well as spectacular views.
Known by some as the Wilderness City, this Northern capital is surrounded by nature's bounty on all sides. There's simply no other place like it.
