  1. What is NETFILE?
NETFILE is one of our electronic tax-filing options -- you can use it to file your 2007 income tax and benefit return using the Internet. At the Canada Revenue Agency, we want to give Canadian taxpayers convenient tax-filing options.

Internet-filed tax returns must be prepared using one of the commercial tax preparation software packages that we've certified to meet our system requirements.

  2. Why are you offering this service?
Until recently, individuals could only send their tax returns to us electronically by either paying a fee to an EFILE service provider or by using TELEFILE, a service that allows eligible individuals to electronically file their current year income tax and benefit return for free using a touch-tone telephone.

Now individuals who have access to the Internet and who purchase CRA NETFILE-certified software to help prepare their tax returns can send us their tax returns electronically using NETFILE.

  3. Why would I want to use NETFILE to file my tax return?
The CRA, like the Government of Canada, is committed to developing electronic options to better serve Canadians. The NETFILE service allows you to file your individual income tax return over the Internet in a fast and easy-to-use way.

Many Canadians already use home computers to prepare their personal tax returns. Using the Internet to file a personal tax return represents one more option that Canadians can use. As an alternative to filing a paper return, Canadians can also choose to file their personal tax return using TELEFILE or EFILE. Both these options offer faster, more error-free processing.

Filing a return using the Internet offers the same advantages as TELEFILE and EFILE -- faster, more error-free processing of the return.

  4. Who can use NETFILE?
NETFILE is available to most Canadians; however, there are some types of tax returns that cannot be submitted electronically. Our Restrictions Web page explains the exceptions. Those individuals who do not wish to use NETFILE can use TELEFILE.

Tax professionals cannot use NETFILE to file tax returns on behalf of their clients. They must use EFILE.

  5. What are the benefits of using NETFILE?
    • Faster refunds
NETFILE allows the CRA to process your return much quicker, which means a faster refund. In most cases, with direct deposit, you can receive your refund in as little as eight business days, compared with four to six weeks for a paper return. Some exceptions apply. Please see our Web site at www.cra-arc.gc.ca/reviews/ for more information.

    • Confirmation within seconds
You will receive electronic confirmation of receipt within seconds of sending your tax return (".tax" file) via NETFILE.

    • Secure
We use both 168-bit and a high-level 128-bit Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption, which is the most secure form of encryption commonly available in North America today. We also have a number of other measures in place to ensure data security and confidentiality. This includes the use of firewalls and individualized access codes.

    • Improved accuracy
Before we accept a return for processing, we perform a series of computer checks and balances. This results in greater accuracy.

    • Environmentally friendly
Except where documents are requested in standard follow-up procedures, NETFILE is a paper-free service.

  6. How do I use NETFILE?

  7. How do I get assistance if I am outside Canada or the United States?
If you have any questions or need assistance and you are calling from outside Canada or the United States, you can call us collect at 709-772-8371.

  8. Is there a cost to use NETFILE?
Although you have to buy tax preparation software or a Web application that we've certified, the NETFILE service itself is free.

  9. What if I realize I made a mistake on my tax return or if I receive an additional information slip after I've sent it via NETFILE?
You can't use NETFILE to change your tax return. To make a change to your tax return, wait until you receive your Notice of Assessment. Once you've received it, you can send a completed form T1-ADJ T1 Adjustment Request, or a signed letter to your tax centre requesting an adjustment to your tax return. You can also use My Account's Change my return option.

If you send a letter, provide your name, address, and social insurance number, and indicate the tax years to be adjusted. Also, because we wouldn't have received any paper documents with your NETFILE tax return, include the receipts and supporting documents for the original claim and the changes you want to make. For example, if you want to claim an additional charitable donation, you have to submit all charitable donation receipts, not just the receipt(s) for the additional amount.
