Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora

CITES in Canada

Within Canada, the implementation and administration of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) are shared among federal and provincial/territorial agencies to make the best use of existing organizational structures and to reduce costs.

As the representative of Canada, the Canadian Wildlife Service is responsible for managing CITES species in Canada vis à vis the international community.

The Wildlife Enforcement Branch is responsible for border controls, and these are based on WAPPRIITA.

Other federal departments also play a role in the implementation of the Convention:

Furthermore, each province and territory is responsible for managing its own wildlife and has also appointed a Management Authority and a Scientific Authority (except for Alberta and Saskatchewan, which has withdrawn from the administration of CITES).
