Critical Care: On the Battlefield

The battlefield has always been a place of carnage and death. But it has also been a place of survival, a race between the power of weapons to take lives and the resourcefulness and courage of those who would save them.

In each of Canada's major wars, Canadian Army medical personnel struggled to save lives against the destructive power of modern weapons. Employing the latest scientific, medical, and technological breakthroughs to fix and to heal those injured in war, they administered critical care on the battlefield and evacuated the wounded as early as possible to safer, better-equipped hospitals farther from the fighting. Immediate treatment and early evacuation remain as essential to a wounded soldier's survival today as they were in the First or Second World War or in Korea.
