Getting a head start through licensing.

Licensing technologies from the NRC Institute for Information Technology (NRC-IIT) can be a profitable way for companies to solve specific research problems or to get new products to market quickly.

NRC-IIT has a strong track record of working with its partners to commercialize, disseminate or apply the outputs of its research.

Technologies looking for partners.

Typically, licensing opportunities arise in one of two ways.

  1. Collaborative research projects may lead to licensing opportunities for the technologies developed during the project. The added advantage to project partners in this case is that they can develop the technologies that are of particular interest to them.

  2. Since NRC-IIT also conducts research independently, its investment in research often leads to licensable technologies that are then made available to companies, the academic community, and/or the public. Please see below for the technologies available now (technologies are listed by type of licence agreement).

What to expect: life-cycle considerations.

Most of the NRC-IIT technologies available for licensing are at the “proof-of-concept” or “prototype”stages. This means that companies wishing to commercialize them will be expected to invest in further technology development. Academics, students and members of the public may find these technologies sufficiently developed for non-commercial purposes.

Each licence agreement is unique.

NRC-IIT licence agreements reflect the status and the desired application of the technology, as well as the partners’needs. Some of the technologies listed below are available on standard terms, whereas others may be subject to negotiation.

Most licence agreements contain terms pertaining to commercialization, licence duration, payments, milestones and periodic reporting. Some technologies may require a business plan or technology usage case.

Open Bidding Processes

Occasionally, NRC-IIT will seek partners through an open bidding process. Invitations for participation in open bidding processes are announced as the opportunities arise.

Commercial Licences

Typically, commercial licences are available on standard terms and are designed to meet the needs of software developers or end-users. The following technologies are currently available through commercial licences:

Academic and Free Licences

Academic licences are available on standard terms drafted with the needs of the academic and student communities in mind.

Open Source Licences

Open source licences are available on standard open source terms.

For general information on commercialization, please contact the Business Development Office. Or, for more information, please visit NRC's Technology Licensing Opportunities.
