Milestones

  • 2002/2003 - The Canadian Rangers celebrate 60 years of history of the formation of the Pacific Coast Militia Rangers. To commemorate the event, many regions of Canada celebrated! In 1 CRPG, they gathered Canadian Rangers representing communities from across the north. From Resolute Bay, NU in April 2002 they conducted an Enhanced Sovereignty Patrol to the Magnetic North Pole.

    The former Minister of National Defence, John McCallum, and the Honourable André Ouellet, Canada Post's President and Chief Executive Officer, unveilled in Yellowknife a commemorative Canada Post stamp that was issued on March 3rd 2003 to honour the Canadian Rangers for their important work.
  • 11 September 2001 - The Canadian Rangers from the region of Labrador/New-Foundland distinguished themselves during the string of terrorist attacks on the US on September 11, 2001, helping to welcome airline passengers from aircraft diverted into Canada.
  • 22 July 2000 – the Minister of National Defence officially announces the expansion of the Canadian Rangers and Junior Canadian Rangers organizations from Kuujjuaq, Northern Quebec.
  • 27 January 2000 – CAN RAN 2000 is completed. CAN RAN 2000 reviewed the Canadian Rangers and Junior Canadian Rangers organizations and assessed their effectiveness. The final outcome is a recommendation of a significant expansion in terms of financial support and increased personnel.
  • 30 April 1998 – the Minister of National Defence authorizes the formation of the Junior Canadian Ranger Programme as a Cadet Organization in accordance with the National Defence Act.

Ready for winter excericises

  • 13 January 1998 – the first Junior Canadian Ranger to graduate from the JCR Programme and decide to continue in the Canadian Rangers is enrolled.
  • 20 June 1996 – His Excellency, the Right Honourable Romeo LeBlanc, Governor General of Canada, presents the Canadian Rangers with their official crest at Canadian Forces Northern Area HQ (CFNA), Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.
  • 31 May 1996 – the Junior Canadian Ranger Programme is officially implemented by the Minister of National Defence to serve Canada’s youth in remote and isolated communities.
  • 1995 – the Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff (VCDS) orders a study investigating the plausibility of expanding the Canadian Rangers south of the 60th parallel. This Ranger Enhancement Project (REP) marks the beginning of a truly national Canadian Ranger organization.
  • November 1994 – a two-year trial involving 10 youth from the community is initiated in Paulatuk, Northwest Territories. This pilot project is the precursor to the Junior Canadian Ranger Programme.
  • 13 January to 01 July 1992 – the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Rangers is commemorated with a cross-Canada journey called Exercise Baton Ranger. Canadian Rangers spend several weeks relaying a wooden baton and log book across Canada using a variety of means of transportation. From British Columbia to St. John's, Newfoundland, via the Arctic.
  • 23 May 1947 – The Canadian Rangers are officially formed with an organizational base similar to that of the Pacific Coast Militia Rangers of World War II, and a newly expanded mandate.
  • 03 March 1942 – The predecessors to the Canadian Rangers – the Pacific Coast Militia Rangers – are formed following the shelling of British Columbia by a Japanese submarine during World War II.
