LIEUTENANT COMMANDER E. A. SHIRLEY, CD. Commanding Officer

Lieutenant Commander Earle Shirley was born in Bathurst, New Brunswick in 1953. Having been raised there, he graduated from Bathurst High School in 1971 and promptly joined the Canadian Forces as an ordinary seaman.

Upon completion of basic recruit training, he completed basic seamanship training at CFB Halifax (Windsor Park) and Radioman (Sea) training at CFB Esquimalt. He was subsequently posted to CFB Shearwater followed by HMCS PROTECTEUR.

He voluntarily released from the Canadian Forces in 1974 in order to pursue a university degree. LCdr Shirley studied geology at the University of New Brunswick and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in 1979. In September of that year, he began his career with the Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board (now called the Energy and Utilities Board) and has been there ever since. He has held a number of positions at the Board including Regional/District Geologist, Manager Resource Appraisal Group, Executive Manager Applications Branch and Chief Operating Officer. In 2001, he was a graduate of the Banff School of Advanced Management. In the fall of 1987, LCdr Shirley began enrolment procedures with the Naval Reserve and was subsequently enrolled in February 1988 as a Direct Entry Officer in the rank of Sub-Lieutenant.

LCdr Shirley was awarded his Bridge Watchkeeping Certificate in 1993. In 1994 he was one of two Reserve MARS officers to serve in HMCS CALGARY during her first transit from Halifax to her home port of Esquimalt.

In 1996, LCdr Shirley served with distinction as part of the Maritime Command Component in Winnipeg during the Red River Flood. Throughout his naval reserve career, LCdr Shirley has been primarily a Class A Reservist and has seen service in a number of ships including Gate Vessels and MCDV’s. LCdr Shirley has held a number of appointments of at HMCS TECUMSEH including Divisional Officer for the Band, Food Services, Divers and Bosuns, and as Head of Department for Ceremonial and Standards, Deck and Operations departments. LCdr Shirley was the Executive Officer at HMCS TECUMSEH during the period 2001 - 2003.

His latest appointment was as the Readiness Officer. LCdr Shirley was appointed Commanding Officer, HMCS TECUMSEH on 8 June 2006.

LCdr Shirley lives in Calgary with his wife Laurence and son Alexander.
