Referendum Questions and Answers

What is Elections BC's role in administering the Referendum on Electoral Reform?

Elections BC administered the Referendum on Electoral Reform in conjunction with the May 17, 2005, general election in accordance with the Electoral Reform Referendum Act and Referendum Act. Voters were provided with two ballots – one for the candidates in their electoral district and one for the province-wide referendum on electoral reform.

Elections BC was responsible for the conduct of the referendum, but was not responsible for providing information to voters on the proposed BC-STV system or the current "FPTP" (First-Past-the-Post) system.

The Citizens' Assembly website has detailed information for the proposed BC-STV system as well as background information on our current FPTP system and other electoral systems they considered.

For more information, see The Citizens’ Assembly website at www.citizensassembly.bc.ca

The Citizens’ Assembly

The Citizens’ Assembly was created by the Government of British Columbia in April 2003 to examine the province’s electoral system.

On October 24, 2004, the 160 members of the Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform recommended that British Columbians adopt a new voting system – the “BC-STV” (British Columbia Single Transferable Vote) process. On December 10, 2004 the Assembly issued its final report explaining their reasons for recommending the BC-STV system
