Financing and Government Assistance

Export Development Canada (EDC)

Export Development Canada (EDC) offers many programs and services to help offset the risks of doing business in other countries.

They provide services to any exporter, of any size, operating in any sector of the economy (including services). EDC generally looks for at least 50% Canadian content.

Small exporters interested in export receivables insurance and export financing support may call toll-free 1-800-850-9626 from Monday to Friday during regular business hours from anywhere in Canada.

EDC Services include:

Risk Management
If a credit check of your buyer looks good, EDC will cover 90% of the loss if the buyer does not pay.

Working Capital
Banks are more likely to accept receivables as security when providing working capital financing if they know the export receivables are insured by EDC.

Accounts Receivable Insurance
With EDC insurance, business owners can extend credit to their export buyers.

Buyer Financing
EDC loans to foreign buyers of Canadian capital goods can help win business owners the deal by giving the buyer time to pay. This also converts the credit sale into a cash sale, since EDC pays the Canadian exporter directly.

Bonding and Guarantees
EDC has a range of services that enable exporters to meet the requirement to post bonds (bid bonds, performance bonds, etc.) in connection with export deals.

Additional Information
Program information may be obtained from a front-line decision-maker (not an operator) at EDC's Emerging Exporters Team call centre.

NEBS
New Exporters to Border States Program (NEBS) is a key export education tool offered by trade offices in the U.S. that targets Canadian companies not yet exporting to the United States. NEBS provides companies with vital practical orientation by introducing them to the essentials of exporting as well as by giving them first-hand exposure to markets located in US border states.

Reverse NEBS
Reverse NEBS is a program that serves Canadian companies not yet exporting to the United States by providing informative seminars in Canada on the essentials of exporting.
