Mount Logan: Canadian Titan Newest Member of Virtual Museum of Canada

WHITEHORSE – Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor invites the public to a special evening at the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre to view the launch of the Virtual Museum of Canada website Mount Logan: Canadian Titan.

"On behalf of the Yukon government, I congratulate the project team for creating a comprehensive look at Mount Logan. The stories and visual images that speak to First Nations culture in the Kluane area, along with climate change, mountaineering, geology and scientific studies are sure to educate and entertain," Taylor said.

Named for Sir William Logan, founder and first director of the Geological Survey of Canada (1842 - 1869), Mount Logan is the highest mountain in Canada at 5959 metres. It is located in Kluane National Park and Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and falls within the traditional territories of the Champagne and Aishihik, Kluane and White River First Nations.

The Mount Logan: Canadian Titan virtual museum website will be hosted by the Federal Canadian Heritage Information Network. CHIN works in partnership with museums across the country to present Canadian stories, facts, photos and information on a variety of topics, bringing rich Canadian content to audiences of all ages and nationalities.

Funding for the Mount Logan: Canadian Titan project was provided by the Virtual Museum of Canada at a cost of $110,000. Additional in-kind contributions came from project partners: Parks Canada, Kluane First Nation, Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, Yukon Geological Survey, Canadian Geological Survey, Equinox Outdoor Learning Centre, the Yukon Government’s Beringia Interpretive Centre, Department of Tourism and Culture, and French Language Services Directorate.

Currently, there are over 500 virtual exhibits and community memories exhibits presented through the Virtual Museum of Canada, with more than seven million people visiting the site each year. Yukon content includes virtual tours of Fort Selkirk; Herschel Island; the Bishop Who Ate His Boots; Photographers of the Gold Rush Era; the Force in the North; and Klondike: the Rush for Gold.

The Mount Logan: Canadian Titan site will be live at www.beringia.com the evening of January 24.

The event takes place Jan. 24, beginning at 6 p.m.
