The Canadian International Freight Forwarders Association (CIFFA) works to professionalize the activities of the freight forwarding industry in Canada. Through its education program, CIFFA offers training on the issues and rules of international trade to its members, as well as to Canadian businesses.

Freight forwarders ensure that internationally traded goods are transported from their point of origin to their destination economically, on time and in good condition. Organizing these logistics requires the negotiation of rates with road, rail, sea and air providers; the creation of compliant documentation; and the strict adherence to ever-changing regulations.

Eligibility Criteria

Businesses interested in international trade.

Summary

The education program at the Canadian International Freight Forwarders Association is available to members, as well as to Canadian businesses looking to expand their knowledge on the issues and rules of international trade. Courses include:

  • Half-day professional development workshops: Intensive and practical, they cover topics such as letters of credit, export reporting, and Incoterms.
  • Dangerous goods: Training from both the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) airfreight and ocean freight are offered as well.
  • Professional education program in freight forwarding: Consists of two modules taken over two years. CIFFA modules and class materials, which are sold worldwide, are considered the prime-learning tool for many colleges in Canada and freight forwarding associations in other countries.

CIFFA establishes a high level of professionalism within the freight forwarding industry in Canada. In addition to a code of ethics, members must adhere to the Association's Standard Trading Conditions, which spell out the responsibilities between freight forwarders and their customers. Another mandatory requirement for members is to have Errors and Omissions coverage in their liability insurance.
