The Yukon Archaeology Program manages more than 3,000 known archaeological sites in Yukon (exclusive of National Parks) and assists First Nations in archaeological site management on Settlement Lands.

The program participates in various land use planning initiatives, and reviews and assesses land use and development proposals for heritage resource impacts.

The program also undertakes archaeological research projects, including projects arising out of First Nation Final Agreements for Special Management Areas and Heritage Site development. The Archaeology Program produces Occasional Papers in Archaeology Series to ensure the rapid dissemination of research results and information on Yukon's prehistoric past.

This program was established to support and fulfill the Government of Yukon's archaeological resource management and research responsibilities under the Archaeological Sites Regulations and the Yukon Historic Resources Act, and the Yukon Land Claim Heritage Sub-Agreement.
