1. Construction Industry

Statistics Canada maintains records related to the construction industry.

Construction Survey (CANSIM II TABLE 034-0001)
Collects data for Canada, the provinces and territories on:

  • revenues
  • costs
  • capital expenditures
  • labour and type of work for the following industries:
    • building
    • developing and general contracting
    • industrial and heavy engineering construction
    • trade contracting

Building Permits Survey (monthly publication No. 64-001-XIE)
The Building Permits Survey produces data on building construction by municipalities in Canada for both the residential and the non-residential sector. These data are gathered and published every month. They provide an indication of future construction activity.

2. Forestry Industry

Statistics Canada maintains records on the forestry industry including those related to shipments of roundwood.

Logging Industry (CANSIM II TABLE 301-0004)
The Annual Census of Forestry collects financial data and production data at the national and provincial levels. The main financial data are the:

  • value of shipments
  • employment data (the number of employees, as well as salaries and wages)
  • cost of raw materials
  • energy consumption
  • commodity data (materials and components, as well as goods shipped)

Compendium of Canadian Forestry Statistics
(National Forestry Database Program, Natural Resources Canada). A compendium of Canadian Forestry Statistics is produced each year in cooperation with the Forestry Branch of the Ministry of Natural Resources. The data present a description of the level of activity in any period and mark change in activity and in forestry resources themselves. The data are available online on the National Forestry Database Program Web site and are divided into the following sections:

  • forest inventory
  • allowable annual cut
  • forest fires
  • forest insects
  • forest products
  • silviculture
  • forest management expenditures

Statistics Canada maintains records on the measurement of price movements in the production of commodities and services and the following price indexes:

Statistics Canada maintains records related to shipments of commodities, materials and supplies used, inventories and orders, employment, and qualitative business assessments on business conditions in manufacturing.

Sub-annual Surveys
Data are collected sub-annually for selected commodities on production, shipments, sales distribution, inventory and/or destination of shipments. Data are available in the Statistics Canada's CANSIM II database under the subject "Manufacturing".

Business Conditions Survey (CANSIM II TABLES 302-0007, 302-0008)
This quarterly survey (conducted in January, April, July and October) collects opinions on expected changes in production and employment during the next three months and the present state of finished product inventories, orders received, backlog of unfilled orders and impediments to production. Impediments to production include: shortage of skilled and unskilled labour; raw materials; working capital; and other non pre-specified categories. Results at the Canada level are available for 21 subsectors and the provinces. Data are published quarterly in the Statistics Canada Daily which is available online.

5. Mineral Industries

Statistics Canada publishes annual statistics on Canada's mineral industries. The principal statistics, by industry and province, include the number of employees and earning, supplies and selected contract services, value of production, consumption of purchased fuel and electricity and tonnage of ore removed. The publications include:

6. Service Industries

Statistics Canada conducts surveys and produces reports with information on revenues, expenses and other operating characteristics of service industries in Canada:

  • Annual Survey of Software Development and Computer Services (annual publication);
  • Annual Survey of Traveller Accommodation (annual publication);
  • Monthly Survey of Restaurants, Caterers and Taverns (monthly publication No. 63-011-XPB);
  • Annual Survey of Architectural, Engineering and Scientific services (annual publication);
  • Annual Survey of Business Service Industries (annual publication). This annual publication is suspended but the following surveys are available on CANSIM II:
    • Annual Survey of Consumer Goods Rental;
    • Annual Survey of Automotive Equipment Rental and Leasing;
    • Annual Survey of Commercial and Industrial Machinery and Equipment Rental and Leasing;

7. Energy - Consumption and Production

Statistics Canada collects and publishes data related to the production, transformation, transportation and consumption of coal, crude oil, natural gas, natural gas by-products, electricity and refined petroleum products. The statistical programs are carried out in collaboration with other government agencies such as Natural Resources Canada, the National Energy Board, and various provincial energy departments. Data are available in the Statistics Canada's CANSIM II database under the subject "Energy". The publications include:

8. The Industrial Monitor on CD-ROM

The Industrial Monitor on CD-ROM offers up-to-date data on more than 150 manufacturing industries and 33 other industries covering construction, wholesale trade and retail trade. This information is offered for 25 sectors, and can be purchased by individual sector or as a complete package.

For each industry, up to 50 variables are organized in the table viewer according to five table types: supply, demand, price, labour/employment, and investment/capital stock. The underlying database is also available via the series browser for more extensive time-series analysis and inter-industry comparisons.

Costs

An annual subscription to the Industrial Monitor (one CD-ROM per month) to the full package costs $995 or $258 per individual sector.
