Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ)

Canada Summer Jobs is an initiative of the Summer Work Experience Program. It provides funding for small businesses with 50 or fewer employees, public-sector employers, and not-for-profit organizations to create high-quality summer job opportunities for students between the ages of 15 and 30.

Eligibility Criteria

Public-sector employers and small private-sector employers with 50 or fewer employees are eligible for up to 50% of the provincial/territorial minimum hourly wage.

Not-for-profit employers are eligible for up to 100% of the provincial/territorial minimum hourly wage and mandatory employment related costs.

Summary

Employers can begin to apply for Canada Summer Jobs starting February 1, 2008. The deadline for applications is February 29, 2008.

Applications will first be reviewed to ensure that they meet the basic eligibility requirements, and then they will be assessed using the following seven criteria:

  • service to local communities;
  • jobs that support local priorities (special events or other defined local priorities, such as tourism);
  • jobs that provide career-related experience or early work experience;
  • a salary that contributes to the student’s income;
  • an employer who provides supervision and mentoring;
  • project activities that are directed toward members of, and support the vitality of, an official-language minority community; and
  • an employer who intends to hire priority students (students with disabilities, Aboriginal students, and students who are members of visible minority groups).

National Guide for Applicants

The National Guide for Applicants will be available on the Internet on February 1, 2008. The guide will contain the following information for employers:

  • eligibility criteria;
  • instructions for completing the Canada Summer Jobs application;
  • the assessment process; and
  • the approval process.
