The Team

Since 1994 the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy legislation has included an opportunity for an independent review by the Review Officer. The Review Office staff supports the Review Officer in resolving freedom of information matters through research, investigation, analysis and mediation. If a matter cannot be settled through mediation, it is referred to the Review Officer for consideration.
The Nova Scotia Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Review Office currently operates with four staff members.

Review Officer
The Review Officer is an independent ombudsman appointed by the Governor in Council for a term of five to seven years. The Review Officer will accept appeals, known as Requests for Review, from applicants or third parties who are not satisfied with the response they received from a public body as a result of an application pursuant to the legislation.

Mediator/Investigator
The Mediator/Investigator is responsible for the investigation and mediation of requests from the public for reviews of decisions made by public bodies pursuant to the FOIPOP Act and Part XX of the Municipal Government Act.
The key responsibilities of the Mediator/Investigator include investigating Requests for Review from throughout the Province of Nova Scotia and initiating mediation proceedings to bring about a resolution of the dispute before it reaches the Review process with the Review Officer.

Case Review Analyst
The Case Review Analyst (CRA) identifies key issues and facts relevant to requests for Review. The Case Review Analyst assists in the education of public body officials and the public on the law and processes relating to access to information or protection of privacy through personal individual contact and delivery of portions of formal training sessions. The CRA provides specialized research and analytical support related to privacy and information access; also applies and interprets legislation and precedent to advise and assist members of the public seeking information about access to record and appeal process under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act as well as privacy issues.

Intake/Administrative Assistant
The Intake/Administrative Assistant provides administrative support the Case Review Analyst, the Mediator/Investigator and the Review Officer. The Intake/Administrative Assistant is responsible for intake on all Requests for Review, general office operations including answering general inquiries, organizing and maintaining records, communicating with government officials and private citizens, performing database and website upkeep, planning special events, and assisting in the preparation of various publications.
