The Indian and Inuit Art Collection of Indian and Northern Affairs in Gatineau, Quebec is one of the best public art collections of traditional and contemporary Aboriginal art in Canada. Since the early 1960s, the Indian and Inuit Art Centre has been collecting works by living artists to create a unique collection that represents the artistic practices of community-based and urban aboriginal artists throughout Canada.
The Indian and Inuit Art Collection includes examples of regional cultural art such as basketry, beadwork, carvings and textiles, as well the contemporary works by established, mid-career and emerging aboriginal artists. The Indian and Inuit Art Centre has more than 40 years of experience in promoting art works of Canada’s aboriginal artists in Canada and abroad through its art institution lending program, international projects, and research facilities for national and international scholars and curators.
