NLOWE fosters the success of women in business through a network of community-based facilitators, member clients, and partnerships in the world of business.  NLOWE is governed by a board of directors and head office staff in St. John's.  A team of regional facilitators strategically positioned throughout the province implement NLOWE's programs and services to members and clients.

Women in Resource Development Committee (WRDC)

WRDC was established to foster an environment that will increase the participation of women in the trades and technology sectors in Newfoundland and Labrador. WRDC achieves this through the elimination of barriers that exclude or discourage women from seeking employment in these sectors. Its work includes:

  • providing increased access to training for women
  • educating the general public, and
  • development of policies that promote the involvement of women in the natural resource and trades/technical industries.

WRDC runs the Orientation to Trades and Technology program (OTT) which is of  24 weeks duration, and is designed to give women practical experience of natural resource based industries. WRDC also has an Educational Resource Centre, offering resources as well as other programs such as:

  • Techsploration, a 6 month career exploration program for grade 9 girls;
  • GETT camps, a week long trades and technology experience for girls age 10-12;
  • Camp GLOW, a week-long firefighting camp for young women; and
  • a mentor's network - women who act as role models in WRDC programs as well as take part in mentor workshops offered by WRDC
  • Gender Sensitivity Training.

Women in Science and Engineering (WISE-NL)
WISE is a non-profit, volunteer organization which aims to increase the participation of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers by increasing awareness that these professions are rewarding and exciting options for women. WISE also provides mentoring, professional developing and networking opportunities to facilitate the success of women in these fields, and advocates for equitable workplaces.

Discovery Women's Network
The Discovery Women's Network (DWN) is an organization for women in the Clarenville area that works to empower women in the Discovery Zone through networking and information sharing. As part of the province's Strategic Social Plan (SSP), the DWN helped create the Strategy for Living web site which contains information and resources for victims of violence.

The Workplace Equity web site is a national site for technical expertise on employment equity.  Besides general information and frequently asked questions about equity, this site has information on policies, programs and legislation, research and statistics, employment equity tools, and related publications and links.

Human Rights Commission - Newfoundland and Labrador
The Human Rights Commission was established in 1971 with the purposes of protecting individuals from discrimination and harassment, and promoting equality of opportunity within provincial government departments and agencies, and private businesses. The Commission handles complaints of discrimination and harassment based on race, religion, religious creed, sex, marital status, physical disability, mental disability, political opinion, colour, or ethnic, national or social origin, sexual orientation and age (19-65). The Commission also covers complaints because of sexual solicitation and because of different pay for females who are performing similar work to males in the same establishment.

Women's Policy Office (WPO)
The Women's Policy Office is the central agency within government coordinating the development of programs and policies for the benefit of women in the province.  Their mandate is to achieve social and economic equality for all women in Newfoundland and Labrador.   The WPO produces and distributes a variety of publications including reports; educational and promotional materials; and information sheets. The WPO also leads the Violence Prevention Initiative.

NL Advisory Council on the Status of Women
The Advisory Council was established in 1980 and works in areas of advising, advocating, lobbying and educating on issues which affect the status of women in Newfoundland and Labrador.  Activities of the Council include providing workshops, maintaining a resource information centre, participating on political action committees and meeting with government representatives.
