Export Information Sources

Last Verified: 2007-01-02

This Guide offers a quick reference to sources of information for those considering an export venture. Many of these are online sources.

The Canada/Manitoba Business Service Centre (C/MBSC) offers a wealth of trade information such as country profiles, trade statistics, market intelligence, the "how to’s" of doing business in foreign countries, international business directories, political risk yearbooks, economic outlooks, export financing and more. We also offer a number of export training sessions such as the "Basics of Exporting" and sponsor specialized trade workshops throughout the year.

BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES

Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC)

Even with technology or product superiority, smaller firms often lack the reputation, experience and financial base to compete effectively in worldwide markets. The CCC helps Canadian companies access the US$5.5 trillion foreign government procurement market and win contracts on the best possible terms and conditions.

International Business Opportunities Centre (IBOC)

IBOC and Trade Commissioners in Canadian trade offices abroad work together to give Canadian companies the opportunity to participate in global markets. When the Centre receives a business opportunity from a Trade Commissioner stationed overseas, the Centre searches databases such as the Virtual Trade Commissioner (VTC) and Industry Canada’s Canadian Company Capabilities (Strategis) and a broad network of sources to find potential suppliers for the specific product/service requested. Interested companies are then referred to the Canadian Trade Commissioner abroad who generated the lead. To position your company to receive trade leads, Canadian companies should register in both the Virtual Trade Commissioner (VTC) and the Canadian Companies Capabilities (Strategis) databases. Companies can register to the VTC atwww.infoexport.gc.ca and register to the Canadian Company Capabilities at strategis.ic.gc.ca/sc_coinf/ccc/engdoc/homepage.html.

TRAINING

ExportUSA

ExportUSA has three components: New Exporters to Border States (NEBS), Exporters to the United States (EXTUS) and Reverse NEBS.

NEBS focuses on export education and is designed for Canadian companies who are thinking of exporting to the United States but have not yet done so. NEBS provides an overview of the export process and includes a one to three day visit to a Canadian Consulate in the United States where you learn more about that U.S. market.

EXTUS is designed for Canadian companies currently exporting to the U.S. and interested in expanding into other regions. EXTUS takes Canadian exporters to a U.S. market to meet with industry experts, attend a major trade show within their sector, and network with local distributors, representatives, wholesalers and buyers.

Reverse NEBS is a one-day seminar in Canada for Canadian companies not yet exporting to the United States. These seminars generally focus on a specific sector or issue and feature guest speakers from the target U.S. market.

Company representatives who travel to the U.S. on a NEBS or EXTUS mission must pay a non-refundable fee of $100 (U.S.) and are responsible for their own transportation, accommodation and personal expenses. The Canadian government may cover a maximum of $100 (CDN) towards the cost of the entry fee to a trade show that forms part of the mission.
