The mission of the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation (NBIF), an independent corporation, is to contribute to building the province's innovation capacity. By operating three equity based investment funds, the Enterprise Innovation Fund, the Venture Capital Fund, and the Seed Equity Fund, the NBIF supports the development and growth of promising, innovation-based start-up and early stage companies in New Brunswick . It provides companies and entrepreneurs with enhanced access to risk capital and value-added support to ultimately allow them to grow and succeed.

Eligibility Criteria

Companies wishing to apply to the NBIF must submit a complete business plan, including pro forma financial statements, to be considered for funding. Such documents should at a minimum demonstrate the following:

  • The viability of the business model and financial model;
  • The innovative nature and commercially viable of the product, service and/or technology;
  • The financial and corporate structure of the company;
  • Strong market potential;
  • Sustainable competitive advantage; and
  • The experience, expertise and track record of the key people involved in the business venture.

Companies must also have and maintain an operational base in New Brunswick and demonstrate a potential for economic impact in New Brunswick.

NBIF investments are focused primarily in the following four strategic industries:

  • Value added natural resources;
  • Advanced manufacturing;
  • Life sciences; and
  • Knowledge industry.

Summary

The NBIF invests in early stage and start-up innovative companies, from entrepreneurs seeking equity capital to launch a new venture to early stage companies with initial revenue that require risk capital to grow and expand their business. Investments by NBIF are made in the form of equity and typically range in size from $25,000 to $500,000 depending on the capital requirements and stage of development of the applicant company. In addition to providing companies with critical equity financing, NBIF also provides companies with access to business expertise and networking opportunities. As a venture partner, the NBIF intends to support the company by augmenting the company’s board of directors with experienced businesspeople and by assisting with formalization of the business and corporate governance structure. The NBIF may also support key strategic initiative undertaken by the company including the raising of additional capital.
