Summary

The mission of the Labour and Employment Board arises out of the six (6) statutes which provide the basis for its jurisdiction:

Industrial Relations Act
Public Service Labour Relations Act
Fisheries Bargaining Act
Employment Standards Act
Pension Benefits Act
Human Rights Act

The Labour and Employment Board:

  • administers the Industrial Relations Act, the Public Service Labour Relations Act and the Fisheries Bargaining Act and adjudicates disputes arising out of alleged violations of these statutes.
  • administers fairly and impartially the appeal processes in relation to decisions of the administrators of the Employment Standards Act and the Pension Benefits Act.
  • acts as a Board of Inquiry under the Human Rights Act by reference from the Minister of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour.
  • enhances collective bargaining and constructive employer-employee relations, reduces conflict and facilitates labour-management cooperation and the fair resolution of disputes.
