Last Verified: 2007-09-12

The Canadian Copyrights Database, accessible free of charge, contains all copyrights which were registered as of October 1, 1991, pursuant to the Copyright Act. This includes traditional copyrights (original literary, artistic, dramatic and musical works) and copyrights in other subject-matter (performer's performances, sound recordings and communication signals). Pre-1991 registration information is available in microfiche, index card and microfilm form in the Client Service Centre in Gatineau, Quebec.

Summary

Benefit to Canadians

The Copyrights Database contains works that have been registered in Canada. Copyright covers creations such as books, musical scores, instructions, menus, paintings, drawings, illustrations, dances, plays, songs, compositions, etc. In addition, it covers a performer's performance if a piece is actually performed, sound recordings of the music that is played and communications signals such as television shows or movies distributed by satellite or on cable. This database provides a glimpse into the creativity of Canadians.

Searching

This database allows you to find the owner(s) of a copyright or those to whom the work has been assigned or licenced. You can then contact the owner for permission to use the work. You can search by title, owner, author, country where published, date published and category.
