Last Verified: 2006-01-27

As part of its International Cultural Relations Program, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (FAITC) provides grants for the promotion of Canadian visual arts and media arts abroad. Activities that are eligible for funding include international touring, preparatory tours, incoming familiarization visits, international career development, and international arts event.

Eligibility Criteria

Canadian art museums, art centres including artist-run centres, professional Canadian visual artists and media artists or Canadian commercial galleries on their behalf are eligible.

Summary

The program objective is the promotion of Canadian interests abroad. Within the context of the general eligibility guidelines, projects will be assessed on their capacity to demonstrate to foreign audiences Canadian artistic and cultural creativity, innovation and excellence. The program consists of five categories:

International Touring of Contemporary Canadian Art Exhibitions

Financial assistance may be provided to encourage the circulation and better appreciation of Canadian contemporary art abroad, as well as the creation of linkages between Canadian and foreign institutions in this field.

Financial assistance will generally not exceed 30% of the total budget.

Preparatory Tours

To help finalize arrangements for touring of Canadian contemporary art exhibitions, consideration will be given to funding preparatory tours by representatives of Canadian non-profit art institutions if deemed necessary for the successful implementation of the project.

The maximum grant is $3 500 per preparatory tour.

Incoming Familiarization Visits

To encourage interest abroad in Canadian Visual Arts and Media Arts, consideration will be given to funding familiarization visits by foreign art experts, curators and art museum directors.

International Career Development

This category is intended to help upcoming artists in the fields of visual arts, media arts and crafts launch international careers and develop market potential by exhibiting in a foreign commercial gallery.

Professional Canadian visual artists and media artists or Canadian commercial galleries on their behalf are eligible.

The maximum grant is $3 500 and will not exceed the cost of international transport and crating of the works, the insurance while in transit, the brokerage fees and the airfare, accommodation and per diem for the artist.

International Art Events

With the objective of facilitating the participation of Canadian artists in non-commercial international visual arts and media art events such as biennials and festivals, financial assistance may be offered to artists who have been invited to participate.

Financial assistance will generally not exceed 30% of the cost of the artist's participation. Eligible costs include international freight costs of the works of art, the crating, insurance of the works while in transit, brokerage fees, as well as travel, accommodation and per diem for the artist to attend the exhibition opening.
