Statistics Canada

Last Verified: 2007-04-30

Statistics Canada maintains a database which tracks and records intercorporate ownership and country of control of corporations in Canada. The primary source of structure and control information is collected under the auspices of the Corporations Returns Act.

Summary

According to the Corporations Return Act, corporations conducting business in Canada whose assets for the reporting period exceed $10 million or whose gross revenue, from business conducted in Canada, exceed $15 million are required to provide structure and ownership information to Statistics Canada. Corporations, under these limits, but having long-term debt or equity owing directly or indirectly to non-residents in excess of a book value of $200 000 are also required to provide this information.

With Inter-Corporate Ownership (ICO) on CD-ROM, Canada's premier resource on corporate ownership, there's no quicker or easier way to get a more complete picture of the structure of Canadian business:

  • their interlocking relationships;
  • how they fit into the company hierarchy;
  • to which industry they belong;
  • in which province the head office is located; and much more.

Inter-Corporate Ownership on CD-ROM keeps you well ahead with over 100 000 changes per year through updates every quarter. With more than 95 000 comprehensive listings, including 13 000 foreign parent companies, ICO on CD-ROM has tens of thousands more listings than any comparable resource. Information collected for ICO on CD-ROM is drawn from a variety of dependable sources such as:

  • the Corporations Returns Act;
  • statements issued by corporations, all Canadian stock exchanges, media information, directories, Industry Canada, and other government departments;
  • international press sources;
  • options, convertible shares and interlocking directorates.
