Activities held throughout the Small Business Week (SBW) provide training and development opportunities for entrepreneurs and potential entrepreneurs, enabling them to meet other business people and share ideas. Events include conferences, trade fairs, seminars, workshops and business luncheons.

Summary

Small Business Week began as a small event in British Columbia in 1979 and has since grown substantially in size and scope to a nation-wide celebration of entrepreneurship. It is held during the month of October every year.

Organized by the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) and endorsed by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, the Week continues to pay tribute to the important contribution that small businesses make to the national economy. BDC branches play an active role in planning and publicizing these events with the assistance of numerous public and private sector organizations from their area.

Small Business Week theme 2007: "A world without boundaries, open to new markets"

The SBW theme recognizes the efforts and contributions made by Canadian entrepreneurs to the national economy, and acknowledges the importance of financial and consulting support for innovative and promising ideas. A new theme is developed every three years.

The world's developing economies are growing at a rapid pace and giving rise to huge emerging middle class markets. Businesses across the globe are already setting their sights on the enormous potential of these expanding new economies. To survive and thrive, Canadian entrepreneurs need to be part of this movement by taking advantage of the tremendous opportunities that are arising in a world without boundaries.

BDC supports Canada's entrepreneurs, and will join them, during Small Business Week, in exploring ways of tapping into the burgeoning spending power of emerging markets across the globe. By sharing innovative ideas, business owners will learn from each other and enlighten us on the secrets of powering entrepreneurial success in Canada.
