Summary

The Canadian Potato Variety Repository is Canada's most comprehensive bank of commercial potato material.  It contain material obtained from the Agriculture and Agri-Food (AAFC) repositories in Vancouver, BC and La Pocatière, QC when these repositories closed in April of 1996.

Most public selections in the repository originate from North American breeding programs. Proprietary varieties and seedlings originate from North American and International sources, and are maintained by special arrangement with their owners or Canadian agents.

Varieties and seedlings in the Canadian Potato Variety Repository are maintained as disease-tested tissue culture stock. All material entering the repository is subjected to a rigorous in-house testing program which meets or exceeds standards established by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency(CFIA). All distributions from the bank are audit tested by a CFIA accredited laboratory in accordance with CFIA regulations.

The Repository serves as a source as well as a point of entry for material into the Canadian Seed Certification System. It offers a wide selection of potato varieties and seedlings to customers across North America and around the world. Public varieties are available for general distribution, while arrangements for obtaining proprietary must be made directly with the owner of the variety. Typically, five plantlets of each requested selection are distributed. Any multiplication functions are outside of the purpose of the repository and any arrangements for multiplication services should be made separately.
