Writing Contest Rules and Instructions 
Students attending grades 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8 in the Northwest Territories are invited to submit entries into the Drive Alive! writing contest.

Each student should write a short essay, no more than 300 words, that begins "My family and I can do more to make ourselves safer when travelling on the roads, trails, and waterways of the Northwest Territories. These are some of the ways we can do so."

Here is some information on the contest.

1. DATES - Entries will be accepted until May 16, 2008. Winners will be announced by the Minister of Transportation on May 30.

2. PRIZES - There will be a winner named in each grade (five winners total).  Each winner will receive a backpack and a certificate acknowledging their contribution. Each winner's school will receive $300 to celebrate the accomplishment of its winning student(s). There will also be "honourable mentions" named.

3. RULES - All entries must be hand-printed or hand-written, and must be legible throughout. The entry must be written solely by the student, but he or she may receive assistance from a parent or teacher to correct grammar or spelling. Winning entries will be chosen by judges selected by the Department of Transportation, and their decision will be final.

4. USE - All winning entries, including those awarded honourable mention, may be used at the discretion of the Department of Transportation to promote transportation safety under the Drive Alive! program without further compensation or approval. The winning entries will be published on the Department of Transportation website, and may also be published in other departmental publications such as posters and activity books. The writer will be acknowledged in each use (grade, school, first initial and last name).  

5. JUDGING - Entries will be judged by the following criteria:
  • Originality
  • Readability
  • Use of language
  • How well the essay's contents, if acted upon, would improve transportation safety
