The Atlantic Gateway

The Atlantic Gateway is the regional transportation network comprised of all the shipping assets located throughout Atlantic Canada. Ideally positioned to provide shippers efficient access to the east coast of North America, it is the closest point of entry to North America for ships transitting the Suez Canal.

The 21st century is unfolding with huge export growth in Asia.

New Brunswick’s shipping systems present efficient opportunities for potential investors to be able to reach their customers in North America and beyond.

The Atlantic Gateway is key for New Brunswick in its on-going pursuit to be self-sufficient by 2026. We are the only Atlantic province that shares a border with the United States. New Brunswick’s multi-modal transportation system provides quick and direct access by land to key markets in the northeastern United States and the rest of Canada.

Increased trade volumes resulting from the Atlantic Gateway will generate new investment, new jobs, and greater economic opportunities for New Brunswickers. As part of this effort, New Brunswick is partnering with the federal government and the private sector to improve its transportation network and update its policies and regulations.

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the development of the Atlantic Gateway has been signed by the four Atlantic Provinces and the federal government.

The main components of the MOU include:

  • A vision and objectives: a common vision of establishing the Atlantic Gateway as a strategic, integrated and globally competitive transportation system that facilitates the movement of international commerce.
  • A governance structure that establishes the Atlantic Gateway Federal-Provincial Officials Committee as the key forum for collaboration.
  • An action plan aligned with the National Policy Framework for Strategic Gateways and Trade Corridors, that will define with further precision, opportunities and challenges associated with increased trade volumes, including identifying potential impacts on the transportation system. Potential measures including international marketing and promotion, are identified as priorities for optimizing the effectiveness and exploitation of the gateway.
