In God’s pocket: Accidents, injuries and perceptions of risk among Newfoundland fish harvesters

Description: Sandra Brennan, MA candidate, Sociology, will deliver this SafetyNet Brown Bag Lecture. Fishing is one of the most dangerous occupations, as research in provincial, national and international contexts has shown. We set out to explore contemporary Newfoundland fish harvesters’ thoughts on what puts them at risk, and their recommendations to improve safety at sea. This presentation focuses on participants' training, experience, and perceptions of risk. Major findings include the interactive and cascading effects of risk factors such as weather, safety equipment, and vessel design; the significant impacts of both intended and unintended consequences of regulations; and the safety effects of changes that have occurred in the industry over time.

Seventh annual Maharajh All-Star Challenge
Time: 7 p.m.-10 p.m.
Location: The Works, Field House
Description: Memorial’s Sea-Hawks men's basketball team is hosting some of the best graduating male high school athletes from across the province. All proceeds will go towards the Children’s Wish Foundation. High school players will take on the Sea-Hawks. Organizers are hoping to raise more than $3,000 from game proceeds. If they do, that means they will have raised more than $20,000 for the foundation since 2001. Admission is a minimum of $4 for adults and $2 for students. Further donations at the door will be accepted in the name of the charity.
The game is named in honour of Mathew Maharajh, a Memorial student, avid basketball player and cancer survivor, who wanted a way to give back to the charity that helped him through his chemotherapy.
