Teaching First Year Courses
Time: 12:30 p.m.-1:40 p.m.
Location: Arts & Administration, A-1043
Description: Many who teach in the sciences teach first year "service" courses that are taken by students in disciplines outside of (as well as within) our own. These courses are often very content-heavy, but that is usually only one aspect of what we want students to take away from the course. For example, many of us also place great value on skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, integration of material from more than one subject area, basic data analysis, and expressing concepts in writing. This panel includes people from several different disciplines who will talk about their own experiences and strategies for teaching and learning in first year courses, addressing the balance between content and science literacy skills.

Teaching Undergraduates in Research Settings
Time: 2 p.m.-3:10 p.m.
Location: AA1043, Arts and Administration Building
Description: This panel will discuss four major areas: a) goals and benefits, b) rules of engagement, c) commonly encountered challenges and d) successful strategies for working with undergraduates in a research setting. Goals and benefits will present the advantages to both students and research professors which arise from this type of teaching. Rules of engagement will review the issues around successful recruitment and orientation of undergraduates into the culture of research. Common challenges will look at the need for ongoing supervision of undergraduates as all stakeholders try to achieve a balance between providing direction and autonomy. Finally, the panel will investigate some successful strategies which can help establish a well-defined and focused experience for both research professors and undergraduate students.

Exploring Safety Behaviours in the Newfoundland Labrador Fibreglass Boat-Building Industry: What Did We Learn?
Time: 1 p.m.-2 p.m.
Location: Genesis Boardroom, IIC3001
Description: The objective of this study was to explore the psycho-social factors associated with safety behaviours of workers in the fibreglass boat-building (FBB) industry in Newfoundland. Qualitative data analysis revealed numerous themes associated with employee safety behaviours in this industry related to: (1) workplace health and safety attitudes; (2) perceptions of risk; (3) community life; (4) employee knowledge concerning styrene exposure; (5) the importance and future of the industry; and, (6) social and organizational factors affecting employee safety behaviours, risk tolerance and willingness to raise safety issues. Data from employee surveys suggest that employee safety behaviours appear to be associated with perceived behavioural expectations of family members and physicians. Further, results suggest that employee knowledge of the health effects of styrene, safety climate, image risk, experience, and community attachment are associated with employee attitudes, social influence, perceived control, risk perception, and reactions to risk. The implications of these findings will be discussed.

Chromatic and flow number for matroids.
Time: 2 p.m.-3 p.m.
Location: HH-3017
Description: These graph parameters have long been the subject of much study, thus extending them to matroids, which are combinatorial structures that generalize graphs, becomes a natural question. This talk will include one such extension based on the circular flow and chromatic numbers. We will assume familiarity with graphs and use them as a starting point. Previous knowledge of matroid theory would be helpful but not necessary.

Living Well With Stress
Time: 12 p.m.-1 p.m.
Location: University Centre, UC-3018
Description: Workplace stress can be triggered from many sources, including feeling that there is too much to do with not enough time or dealing with a difficult co-worker/customer. When combined with pressures and responsibilities outside of work, it is no wonder that people experience high levels of stress both at work and at home. Some stressful events are commonly experienced across a large group; others may be unique to individuals. Stress experienced in any area can impact the many facets of an individual’s life. With a large portion of the population experiencing stress at any given time, it is essential to learn how to manage it effectively for increased health, well-being and workplace productivity.
