Farmers have a real partner in a new Liberal government: Easter

WINNIPEG – The $650 million in added incentives for farmers announced yesterday by Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion shows that the Liberal Party is the best choice for Canadian farm families, Liberal Agriculture Critic Wayne Easter said today.

“As Mr. Dion promised when he announced the Liberal green shift plan at the beginning of the summer, we have been sitting down with members of the agricultural community and listening to their suggestions,” said Mr. Easter. “We now have specific measures to help farmers adapt to our green shift plan, to encourage and reward them to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and invest in alternatives.”

Yesterday in Winnipeg, Mr. Dion announced that as part of the Liberal green shift plan, $400 million will be allocated over four years for Emissions Reduction Credits. The credits will be delivered as refundable tax credits, meaning that farmers will get credits for emissions reduction regardless of income.

Mr. Easter explained that the Emissions Reduction Credits will encourage and reward farmers who are achieving verified reductions in non-energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. Examples of how these could be achieved include minimum tillage carbon sinks, manure management and land set-asides.

In addition to the Liberal green shift plan’s accelerated capital cost allowance for investment in green machinery and equipment, a new Liberal government will also invest $250 million into a Green Farms Fund. This Fund will support research in, and provide rebates on, green farm technologies that reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Rural residents will also benefit from the Liberal green shift plan’s significant income tax reductions and other tax benefits, such as a new universal child tax benefit worth $350 per child, per year, a $1,850 refundable employment credit for those Canadians who earn less than $50,000 per year and a $150 annual Green Rural Credit for every rural Canadian, whether they pay taxes or not.

“Canadian farmers and their families have suffered some devastating blows under this right-wing Conservative government, including the decimation of the Canadian Wheat Board and a refusal to defend our supply management industries,” said Mr. Easter.

“With strong Liberal candidates across the country, just like former Canadian Federation of Agriculture President Bob Friesen in Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia, Canadian farmers find a productive partner in a new Liberal government. Our green shift plan will help position them to be the foundation for a green, sustainable economy,” he said.
