How to Request a Transfer

There are two main forms of transfer:

Transfer to Other Government Departments (OGD) involves the transfer of materiel on a potentially recoverable basis from the DND/CAF to an OGD.

Gratuitous Transfer is the transfer of surplus materiel at no cost to:

  • Another federal organization;
  • Organizations in other levels of government in Canada, including First Nations;
  • Other friendly national governments;
  • Treaty organizations of which Canada is member; or
  • the United Nations.

This option would be used when deemed to be in the interest of the Crown and/or as a cost avoidance measure.

Transfer and Gratuitous Transfer Request Process

The Transfer and Gratuitous Transfer process varies depending on the individual circumstances of each situation. To inquire as to a Transfer or Gratuitous Transfer request, please contact DDSAL at DDSAL-DSVAP@forces.gc.ca with the following information:

  1. The asset(s) you are interested in;
  2. Your Country and Organization;
  3. Point of contact information (name, telephone number, email address, mailing address)
  4. The proposed new end use of the asset.

DDSAL will review your request and staff it to the appropriate approval authority. Further direction will be given at this point depending on the availability of the asset and the individual circumstances of the request.

Note: The time to transfer assets varies from several weeks to over a year depending on the assets involved and the individual circumstances of each case. Please take this into consideration when initiating a transfer request.
