Task forces

In expeditionary operations, a task force comprises all the Canadian Armed Forces personnel and assets committed to a specific mission and operating in a specific area of responsibility.

Task forces are selected, organized, equipped and trained for their missions by the Canadian Army, the Royal Canadian Navy and the Royal Canadian Air Force, which are therefore referred to as “force generators.” As a “force employer,” CJOC takes over each task force when it is ready for operations, and directs it throughout its tour of duty until its return to Canada.

In long-running expeditionary operations, task force personnel are rotated at least once per year in a process known as “relief in place.” The tour of duty on an expeditionary operation typically ranges from six to 12 months.

Current deployments

More than 1,300 Canadian soldiers, sailors, airmen and airwomen are currently serving with task forces deployed on expeditionary operations.
