Road Safety Achievement Award Trophy
Nominations are now open for MTO’s Road Safety Achievement Awards for 2017. For more than twenty years, these awards have recognized the outstanding contributions of individuals, groups and organizations who work to improve road safety in Ontario.
MTO is excited to launch the nomination process for this year’s Road Safety Achievement Awards and acknowledge the leadership, commitment and dedication of its road safety partners across the province, and celebrate their accomplishments over the past year. MTO values their partnership as it strives to have the safest roads in the world. Their work is an integral part of what the ministry does in ensuring the roads are safe for everyone that travels in Ontario.
Award recipients, their nominators and all nominees will be invited to the Award Ceremony to be held in June.
Award Categories
Road Safety Achievement Awards are presented in six categories:
Road Safety Achievement: Professional
This award recognizes an individual’s leadership, dedication and creativity in the field of road safety promotion. The award is given to an individual who works in road safety in a professional capacity and has made a significant contribution through community initiatives, public education, research or the influence of policy.
Road Safety Achievement: Volunteer
This award highlights a volunteer’s efforts, dedication and commitment to the field of road safety promotion. The award is given to an individual, or group of individuals, whose contributions have had a significant impact on the safety of the roads in their community.
Media Excellence in Road Safety
This award recognizes the media’s contribution to Ontario road safety by promoting community programs and strategies for dealing with road safety issues. This award is open to all forms of media coverage and nominations can include individuals or media outlets. Staff or freelancers from print and electronic media are also eligible for nomination.
Corporate Leadership in Road Safety
This award is presented to an organization that has demonstrated a commitment to road safety through the development of community partnerships and support for community programs. This award is open to all organizations in the private and broader public sector.
Road Safety Partnerships
This award recognizes an organization that has demonstrated a commitment to working constructively with other stakeholders including community and corporate entities to achieve successful cross-organizational initiatives to promote road safety.
Road Safety Initiative of the Year
This award recognizes an awareness program, campaign or initiative developed by our road safety partners that demonstrates innovation, leadership and creativity in order to change driver behaviour.
Submitting a nomination
Please be sure to include the following with each nomination submission:
- A nomination letter, at least one-page long that outlines the nominee’s accomplishments and highlights examples of leadership, dedication and commitment in the field of road safety.
- A minimum of two letters of support written/signed by two separate individuals. Please be sure to clearly indicate who is submitting the nomination and who the nominee is.
- A fully completed nomination form (note that incomplete forms will not be considered).
- Multiple nominations for a single nominee (either individual, group or organization) will be accepted. It may help strengthen a submission if different nominators can provide different perspectives on the work of the nominee.
- Please select only one award category for each submission.
- Please send all nomination packages to the Awards’ Coordinator no later than April 11, 2018. Please include the name of the nominee in the subject line of the email.
- Please include all nomination materials in one email as an attachment. Letters of support or materials sent separately will not be considered.

Selection process
Each year the Road Safety Marketing Office establishes a selection committee that is diverse and broadly represents the road safety and injury prevention sectors.
This independent panel of judges includes representatives from government, public health, injury prevention and road safety disciplines who review all nominations and evaluate them based on how well they have demonstrated the specific criteria.
The selection committee meets several times and will make its final selections by early May 2018. The decisions of the selection committee are final.
Award recipients will be notified by end of May.
About the ceremony
The Awards Ceremony will be held in the Greater Toronto Area in mid-June. Award recipients, their nominators and all nominees will be invited to attend.
Recipients, nominees and nominators will be informed of the results either by email or letter by end of May. You may also contact the Awards’ Chair to find out about the status of your submission.
