This section discusses when ethics review is required. It describes the
Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving
Humans (TCPS) standards and procedures for the authority, membership,
organization and administration of a Research Ethics Board (REB). It explains
the processes used by the REB in project review. Case studies help you
apply this information. You can check your progress at the end of the
section.
By the end of this section, you should be able to:
- determine when the REB should be consulted
- describe the role of the REB
- explain what the REB has authority to do
- list the minimum REB membership requirements
- recognize the TCPS standards and procedures for REB administration
- describe the concept of minimal risk and its relationship to a proportionate
approach to ethics assessment
- indicate when scholarly review of research is required
- describe the TCPS standards and procedures for on-going review
- analyze the harms and benefits associated with a research project
- apply the TCPS ethics review process in the context of a research
