Witness to History

Recommended level: all

Availability: October to June, pending witnesses' availability
Start times: Between 9:00am and 4:00pm
Group size: 50
Cost: $4.00 per student, includes Museum admission

Students can hear a compelling personal story and interact with a veteran who has witnessed some of the extraordinary events that have shaped the country.

*Must be requested at least 1 month in advance. While every effort will be made to pair the group with a witness, the Museum may not be able to accommodate every request.

Veterans of the following conflicts and/or service areas may be available: Second World War, Korean War, service with NATO, service with NORAD, service with the United Nations and domestic operations. Please specify your preference upon request.

Military History Research Centre brings together the George Metcalf Archival Collection and the Hartland Molson Library. These extensive national collections of primary and secondary research material document Canada's military history from the pre-contact period to the present.

Students and classes with established research projects receive the dedicated assistance of Research Centre staff or volunteers for 90 minutes. Within that time, they follow a tour of the Research Centre and receive help searching the collection and retrieving materials.

  • Must be requested at least 1 month in advance, and subject to availability.
  • Teacher and/or Students should consult the on-line catalogue prior to the visiting.
  • A maximum of 10 archival items may be requested per group.
  • Please submit your requests for archival material 1 week beforer your visit to: vimy.biblio@warmuseum.ca or fax to (819) 776-8623.

Guided Tours

Recommended level: intermediate to senior

If you're pressed for time, we suggest one of our guided tours. Each tour allows students to see exhibition highlights and allow them to interact with select period artifacts.

Cost: $5.50 per student, includes Museum admission

1. Wars on Our Soil, from Earliest Times to 1885 - "Battleground"
Covers the early conflicts and battles that helped shape Canada. Includes the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, the War of 1812 and the Rebellions of 1837-38

2. The South African and First World Wars - "For Crown and Country"
Covers the South African War and the First World War. Includes the Battle of Vimy Ridge, the Conscription Crisis, a tour through a recreated trench and stunning works of art.

3. Modern Canada and the Second World War - "Forged in Fire"
Examines how Canada's fight against dictatorships transformed the country. Includes stops along the Home front, D-Day, the Italian Campaign and the war in the air and on the sea.

4. The Cold War, Peacekeeping and Recent Conflicts - "A Violent Peace"
Explores Canada's military involvement during the Cold War and the Korean War, and profiles our peace support activities to the present day.

5. Museum Grand Tour
Includes a look at the museum's world-class architecture, its collection of military art and some of the personal stories featured in its exhibition galleries.

Gallery Activity Sheets

Recommended level: intermediate

Duration: Variable
Availability: Year-round
Start times: Anytime during opening hours
Group size: Unlimited
Cost: $1.00 per sheet

Structure a self-guided visit of our permanent exhibitions with gallery activity sheets. Students work together in small groups to find the answers to thought-provoking questions and activities. A separate sheet is available for each of the following galleries:
1. Wars on Our Soil, from Earliest Times to 1885 - "Battleground"
2. The South African and First World Wars - "For Crown and Country"
3. Modern Canada and the Second World War - "Forged in Fire"

Educators' Passes
Prior to bringing your students to the Museum, you may visit the Museum free of charge. To book an appointment with our Education Officer, please call (819) 776-8606. Note: only one free pass is available per educator.

Upon your arrival

Group entrance
Please ensure that your group arrives on time. Arriving late may impact the content and length of your programme or tour. Once your group is at the Group Entrance, please have one representative check-in at the ticket desk. Students will receive a brief welcome and orientation to the Museum before proceeding with their visit or activity.

Cloak room
A small storage area will be assigned to your group upon your arrival, free of charge. The cloak room is located at the group entrance.

Eating at the Museum
The Museum offers two choices for eating on-site. The Mess is a full service cafeteria where hot meals and sandwiches may be purchased and consumed. In addition, a lunchroom is available on a first-come, first-served basis for groups that bring their own lunches. Please request use of the lunchroom upon your arrival at the group entrance.

Accessibility
The Museum is fully wheelchair and walker accessible. Should your group have any special needs, please mention them when you make your booking.

The Canadian War Museum is located at 1 Vimy Place, on LeBreton Flats, at the corner of Booth Street and the Ottawa River Parkway, west of Parliament Hill.

Hours

The Canadian War Museum is open from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm daily, with extended hours to 9:00 pm every Thursday. The Museum is closed on Mondays from mid-October to the end of April.

Registering your group

Reservations

To reserve, simply e-mail us at call_center@warmuseum.ca or call us at (819) 776-7014 or 1 800 555-5621. You can also fax us at (819) 776-8279. To help save you time when you call to book, please have the following information ready:

  • Type of programme or service
  • Number of participants and their grade level
  • Preferred and alternate dates and times
  • Language of programme
  • Contact name, school, telephone and fax numbers
  • Credit card number and expiry date

Groups must register at least three weeks in advance, although we recommend that bookings be made as early as possible in order to avoid disappointment.

A contract will be sent to you. To confirm your reservation, you must sign and return the contract by fax to (819)776-8279.

Cancellations

There is no charge for cancellations due to inclement weather or other unforeseeable reasons. All other programme cancellations or modifications must be received by the Museum a minimum of 14 days prior to scheduled arrival. The full cost of the programme will be charged to schools that do not provide adequate notice of cancellation.

Adult Supervision

The Canadian War Museum requires at least ONE adult supervisor for every 10 visitors aged 3-17.
