How To Apply

APPLICATION INFORMATION

These instructions were developed to assist individuals who wish to gain initial certification in non-destructive testing (NDT) according to the CAN/CGSB 48.9712-2000 Standard.

Effective January 1, 2003, the National Certifying Agency (NCA) will no longer offer examination/certification at Level 1 in the Magnetic Particle and Liquid Penetrant inspection methods.

Presently, certifications are offered in one or more of the following methods, sectors and levels.

Industrial Radiography (RT):
Engineering, Materials and Components (EMC) Sector: Levels 1, 2 or 3
Aerospace (A/S) Sector: Levels 2 or 3

Ultrasonics (UT):
Engineering, Materials and Components (EMC) Sector: Levels 1, 2 or 3

Magnetic Particle (MT):
Engineering, Materials and Components (EMC) Sector: Levels 2 or 3

Liquid Penetrant (PT):
Engineering, Materials and Components (EMC) Sector: Levels 2 or 3

Eddy Current (ET):
Engineering, Materials and Components (EMC) Sector: Levels 1, 2 or 3

Notes:
Another term to designate the "EMC" is Multi-Sector.
Level 3 is the most senior.

HOW TO APPLY AND WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR INITIAL CERTIFICATION EXAMINATION

An application form must be completed and submitted to the NDT Certifying Agency to confirm an NDT candidate's eligibility to undergo both written and practical examinations. The NDT candidate must include fees and all relevant information and documentation. To facilitate this task, the following details are provided:

  1. Fees - The procedures for the payment of registration and examination fees are explained, and the fees to be paid are shown in the fee schedules in the "Procedure for payment of fees" section.

  2. Identification Card Photo - NDT candidates registering with the NDT Certifying Agency for the first time must provide two (2) photographs (black and white or colour) 3 cm x 2.5 cm in size. The NDT candidate will then be issued a laminated photo identification card. The photo card will be valid for a period up to six years and the renewal of this card will coincide with the three-year staggered certification renewal process.

  3. Educational Background - All NDT candidates must indicate their level of education on the application form. However, only Level 3 NDT candidates are required to provide documented evidence of education in the form of diplomas or transcripts. This is because the experience time required to establish the eligibility of Level 3 NDT candidates depends on the education level.

  4. NDT Training Courses - Training courses are mandatory and certificates or documentation of successful completion must be presented to the NDT Certifying Agency.
  5. A list of organizations that offer NDT training courses is available.

  6. Code of Ethics - To be eligible for certification, the NDT candidate must agree to abide by a code of ethics. This is done by signing the Code of Ethics Form.

  7. Eye Examination - NDT candidates shall provide evidence of satisfactory vision as determined by an ophthalmologist, optometrist or other recognized medical professional on our standard vision form.

  8. Experience - When completing this section of the application, the candidate must identify each employer/company and provide a complete and thorough description of their work experience specific to the NDT method(s) in which one is requesting examination eligibility.

The candidate must also clearly identify the period of employment for each employer/company, the acquired NDT experience in months and/or weeks, and show the percentage of time engaged in the pertinent NDT method(s). See below to calculate experience credits.

To gain a credit for work experience, one must work under qualified supervision. Previously, NDT candidates were required to gain experience under the supervision of Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) certified personnel. NDT candidates will now be allowed to gain experience under "qualified supervision." This will allow the NDT Certifying Agency flexibility to assess the degree of competence of the supervision and to accept experience under non-CGSB certified personnel. The supervisor's name, registration number, type of certification (if applicable), position title and organization must be identified in the reference section on page 3 of the application form.

The application and supporting documentation dealing with NDT experience must be signed by both the applicant and a witness, usually the immediate supervisor.

NDT experience may be acquired either before or after success in the qualification examination. If experience is sought after successful examination, the results of the examination shall remain valid for two years.

Candidates applying for Level 3 certification must, in addition to the aforementioned, provide an expanded experience résumé.

HOW TO CALCULATE EXPERIENCE CREDITS

Situation 1:
An NDT candidate is applying for Level 2 Industrial Radiography (RT) examination eligibility, which requires 12 months experience, working 100% of the time in RT inspection. Keep in mind that credit for experience can be gained on a continuous or on an accumulated basis.

Period of Employment - 01/10/91 - 30/09/95
Acquired NDT Experience - 48 months
Percentage of time - Industrial Radiography 25%
Calculation · 48 months x 25% RT = 12 months experience
This NDT candidate satisfies the experience time requirements for Level 2 Industrial Radiography.

Situation 2:
The same NDT candidate in situation 1 is also applying for examination in Level 2 Ultrasonics (UT). Level 2 Ultrasonics requires 12 months at 100% of the time in UT inspection. Keep in mind that qualifying in 2 NDT methods provides for a 25% reduction in experience time.

Period of Employment - 01/10/91 - 30/09/95
Acquired NDT Experience - 48 months
Percentage of time - Ultrasonics 20%
Calculation

· 12 months - 25% (reduction) = 9 months experience required
· 48 months x 20% UT = 9.6 months experience gained

This NDT candidate would satisfy the experience time requirements for Level 2 Ultrasonic examination as well.

Note: The personal information presented on the application form is strictly confidential. No information about the NDT candidate will be relayed to any other person or organization without the consent of the NDT candidate.

Please allow two weeks for the NDT Certifying Agency to process an application form.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR WRITTEN EXAMINATION

With examinations on demand, each eligible NDT candidate (one that has made application and has been issued an examination admittance and registration form from the NDT Certifying Agency) will have the option to arrange and complete written examinations at either an Approved Test Centre or a Special Test Centre.

Approved Test Centres

These examination centres have an inventory of examination papers, similar to the Ottawa test centre, and once an NDT candidate has been registered for examination and issued an examination admittance and registration form, he/she may contact the approved test centre of his/her choice to arrange an examination date convenient to both the candidate and the test centre.

Special Test Centres

The special test centres provide an option for the NDT candidate when, due to location, access to an approved test centre is not practical or feasible. Acceptable testing facilities are community colleges, schools or government organizations.

Once the NDT candidate has received an examination Admittance and Registration Form, he/she must establish with a chosen test centre an examination date. The NDT Certifying Agency must receive written notification at least two weeks prior to the testing date. Requests must include:

  • proposed examination date;
  • examinations to be attempted;
  • name and address of special test centre;
  • supervisor name and telephone number.

Providing the registration deadline is met and the test centre meets the NDT Certifying Agency's criteria for a testing facility, the appropriate examination(s) will be sent to the test centre.

Written Re-examination

An NDT candidate for re-examination must submit a written request complete with the applicable written registration fee. Following approval, the NDT candidate will be issued an Admittance and Registration Form to arrange for examination.

For re-examination, the NDT candidate will not be required to re-submit certain documentation (i.e., training, education, eye examination report, etc.) as this information would be on file.

Requests for re-examination may be sent by mail or facsimile.

Each eligible NDT candidate will be provided with a letter confirming their eligibility for written and/or practical examination. The letter will be accompanied by an NDT Examination Admittance and Registration Form if the written registration fee has been paid to the Receiver General for Canada. Access to an examination centre will be denied if the NDT candidate fails to produce an Examination Admittance and Registration Form.
