Specific Curriculum Expectations: Grade 7
Previous (Curriculum-linked Classroom Activities)Index (Geoscape Ottawa-Gatineau)Next (Specific Curriculum Expectations: Grades 9 and 11)

These lessons are designed to meet the Grade 7 Ontario curriculum for Science and Geography.

Strand and Topic Expectations
Science:
Earth and Space Systems
The Earth's Crust
  • distinguish between rocks and minerals
  • classify rocks and minerals, based on observations, according to their characteristics and method of formation
  • identify the geological processes involved in rock and mineral formation (e.g., volcanic activity releases lava; the deep cooling of magma produces granite);
  • explain the rock cycle (e.g., formation, weathering, sedimentation, and reformation
  • demonstrate an understanding of how changes in the earth's crust result from external processes
  • investigate the formation of the physical features of the Earth's crust
  • describe, using simulations or models, the origin and history of natural features of the local landscape
  • describe, using models, the processes involved in faulting of the earth's surface
  • analyze, through observation, evidence of geological change (e.g., fossils, strata)
  • identify earth resources used by humans to manufacture products
  • compile qualitative and quantitative data gathered through investigation in order to record results using charts produced by hand
  • explain the causes of some natural events that occur on or near the earth's surface and their effects.
  • describe how humans are affected by natural events and how technology has helped humans adapt to these events
  • investigate some of the ways in which humans have altered the landscape to meet their needs and assess the environmental and economic consequences
  • identify the factors that must be considered in making informed decisions about land use and explain their importance
Geography:
Patterns in Physical Geography
  • identify and explain how landforms are used to delineate regions
  • analyse, synthesize, and evaluate data
  • locate relevant information from primary sources (aerial photographs, satellite images)
  • draw cross-sectional diagrams
  • identify and describe world climate patterns
  • demonstrate an understanding that climate patterns result from the interaction of several factors: latitude, altitude, global wind systems, air masses, proximity to large bodies of water, ocean currents
  • demonstrate an understanding of how physical patterns affect human activity
Geography:
Natural Resources
  • demonstrate an understanding of the concept of sustainable development and its implications for the environment
