Digital Elevation Models (DEM) are increasingly being used within environmental geoscience mapping programs. The relative ease with which high quality DEMs can now be created, enhanced and viewed within Geographic Information Systems are providing geoscientists with unique visually informative perspectives of terrain not available before. For the Oak Ridges Moraine area of southern Ontario, a quality controlled, 32,000 square kilometre DEM has been developed, primarily using digital 1:50,000 scale topographic maps. Enhancements of this model (Kenny et al., 1997; Skinner and Moore, 1997) are being used as a component of a surficial geology and hydrogeology mapping program Overview map
