Project: Paleo-environmental records of climate change Sub-activity: Great Lakes sensitivity of hydrologic response to paleo-climatic change This information represents activities in the Earth Sciences Sector Programs (2002-2006). Please refer to Priorities for information on current Earth Sciences Sector Programs.
This research will provide paleoclimate data for validating the NOAA model of Great Lakes hydrology, and will provide data about past Great Lakes hydrologic behavior to the International Joint Commission which advises the US and Canada government about water resource issues and policy. Methodologies include analysing paleo-ecological and geochemical data from new and archival cores to derive Great Lakes history and evidence for closed lowstands; core and analyse 4-6 small lakes for paleoclimate records; and acquire paleo-fluvial evidence in support or against closed Great Lakes lowstands. Presentations of project science and interim results made to stakeholders on a regular basis.
