Project: Regional climate change impacts: Geoscience information for OGDs
Activity: Climate change and sea ice in the NW Passage

This information represents activities in the Earth Sciences Sector Programs (2002-2006). Please refer to Priorities for information on current Earth Sciences Sector Programs.

Arctic warming has begun to lengthen the ice-free season, and prolonged warming could result in the NW Passage being navigable through significant parts of the year. The research draws on paleo-environmental records to provide empirical models of sea-ice conditions. Methodological issues include resolving the relationship between modern sea-ice and climate variables, and documenting Holocene sea-ice history and corresponding terrestrial climate history of the Northwest Passage.
