Project: Monitoring methods and assessment of carbon sequestration over Canada's landmass Activity: Satellite monitoring methods and products for improving biological carbon budget estimates This information represents activities in the Earth Sciences Sector Programs (2002-2006). Please refer to Priorities for information on current Earth Sciences Sector Programs.
The research will use a combination of fine and coarse resolution satellite imagery to quantify vegetation cover and changes in vegetation cover that impact terrestrial carbon budget. A special emphasis will be placed on northern ecosystems to fill present gaps and ensure that the work is complementary to ongoing government efforts towards national carbon accounting. Work includes generation of land cover characterization of Canada's landmass area covering agriculture, forest, taiga, tundra, and wetlands ecosystems; vegetation structure parameters (e.g., leaf area index, biomass) maps over these ecosystems; monitoring methods of land use change, fire emission estimates; and change detection of vegetation structure variables.
