Photo 5 - New channel eroded beside a dam

Photograph of the Chute-Garneau dam on Rivière Chicoutimi where a newly eroded channel carries the flow beside the dam, completely by-passing the penstocks and sluice gates. The dam is left intact, but non-functional. This damage occurred because flood waters spilled overtop of, and eroded into unconsolidated marine deposits (silt and clay) which abutted the dam. Photograph taken on July 26, 1996 (GSC photograph 1997-42N).
