Guidance and Counselling: Peer Helping

Peer helping programs enhance the effectiveness of the comprehensive guidance and counselling program by expanding services. Peer helpers receive training and assist with one-to-one helping relationships, group leadership, discussion leadership, tutoring and many other activities.

Peer Helpers are selected and trained in communication and helping skills. The peer helpers can then help provide services such as:

  1. leadership/cross-age group
  2. tutoring in academic areas
  3. welcoming new students
  4. peer mediation and conflict resolution helpers
  5. community and volunteer services
  6. alerting counsellors to serious problems
  7. helping students-at-risk
  8. helping special needs students
  9. peer helper trainers, and
  10. career information coordinators.

Peer helpers are provided with on-going direction and help by the school counsellor.
