NewsJuly 27, 2004 NEW $1-MILLION FUND TO STIMULATE YUKON BUSINESS WHITEHORSE – Yukon businesses are poised to receive a $1-million endowment, courtesy of the Yukon government and its highly anticipated new Enterprise Trade Fund (ETF). The ETF was developed following an extensive consultation by Yukon Economic Development this past winter. The ensuing dialogue illuminated the business community’s strong desire for funding programs focused on invigorating the territory’s economy and developing a “sustainable competitive advantage”. “Stimulating the Yukon economy is our government’s highest priority,” Economic Development Minister Jim Kenyon said. “The Enterprise Trade Fund’s one million dollars will contribute to a more innovative and competitive economy by supporting business activity in the territory through market expansion, business development, new enterprises and increased employment.” News Release May 14, 2004 Yukon Economic Summit: Developing First Nation / Private Sector Partnerships WHITEHORSE – First Nation business leaders from a number of jurisdictions met in Whitehorse May 27 and 28 to share their experiences in business development. Internationally recognized aboriginal business leaders spoke on creating new business ventures across a wide range of economic sectors and disciplines. “This business summit was built on the momentum generated at the First Nation roundtable meeting we convened in Anchorage during the Canada Gala,” said Premier and Minister of Economic Development Dennis Fentie. News Release July 25, 2003 Yukon Information Technology Market Research Study Complete A survey of 150 Yukon business and non-profit organizations was conducted in March 2003 asking about use of information technology. Eighty per cent of Yukon businesses use information technology (IT), about the same as the Canadian average despite the smaller size of Yukon businesses. The survey addressed topics that included whether businesses or organizations used personal computers, intranet, mainframes/servers, specialized hardware, email, internet, web site, accounting/inventory software, specialized software, where they purchased/serviced the hardware/software, importance of IT, plans for future growth, type of industry and size. July 21, 2003 Yukon Telecommunications Study Released The Yukon Telecomunications study, completed by Lemay-Yates Associates Inc. of Montreal, discusses the present and future needs for telecom services in the Yukon and an assessment of network and infrastructure, competitive choices, competitive entry and the regulatory framework. "The Study showed an improvement in telecommunication in the Yukon and that
overall basic services is on par with or ahead of the rest of the country," said
Dennis Fentie, Premier and Minister of Economic Development. "The Study also
identified areas for improvement which government and industry can use to focus our future efforts."
July 5, 2004 Appointment - Film & Sound Commissioner
Premier Dennis Fentie is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Margarita Ramon as the Yukon Film and Sound Commissioner. Ms. Ramon brings to her new role a vast background and experience in media arts, specifically in television/ film production and international marketing. Her experience as a writer, producer, on-air personality and owner of a respected media production company will help to forge a dynamic and progressive film and sound industry for the Yukon. July 18, 2003 Film Commission Review Public Meeting July 14, 2003 Film Commission Review Draft Report Released The Yukon Film Commission Review Committee has received the first draft of the Janzen and Association Report on the Film Commission. Diane Janzen will be discussing her report at a public meeting on Friday, July 18, 2003 beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Gold Rush Inn. Carole Vivier, Chief Executive Officer of Manitoba Film and Sound will also attend the
public meeting to provide her insight. Manitoba Film and Sound is a provincial funding
agency that promotes the local film and sound industries by financially investing in film
and music projects. It also markets Manitoba to offshore production companies. June 19, 2003 The process of reviewing the Yukon Film Commission has begun. Under the direction of a joint project steering committee, the services of Janzen & Associates have been retained by the Department of Economic Development to conduct the review. The Yukon Film Commission Review Steering Committee represents the Yukon Film Society,
the Northern Film and Video Industry Association, independent film producers, the
Recording Arts Industry Yukon Association, the Departments of Economic Development and
Tourism and Culture, and the northern broadcasting community. Members include David
Curtis, Ken Kane, Mark Smith, Tina Sebert, George Henry, Andrew Connors, Laurel Parry and
Terry Hayden.
July 7, 2003 Premier To Discuss Northern Economic Development At Meetings Premier Dennis Fentie will meet with his provincial and territories colleagues at the 44th Annual Premiers Conference July 9 to 11 in Charlottetown, PEI. Premier Fentie will discuss the renewal of northern economic development agreements
between territories and provinces and the federal government as well as health care,
responding to emergencies such as SARS and BSE, Canada-US relations and
federal-provincial-territorial relations. May 28, 2003 Information Technology Strategy Finalized Following four months of public review, the Yukon Information Technology Sector Strategy is complete and available both on-line and in print. The strategy reports on where the industry is now and where it should be in the future.
It examines developing global IT sectors and analyzes how the Yukon can best fit into the
new information economy. With the release of the Yukon IT Sector Strategy, work will
commence on the development of an IT implementation plan.The strategy is available on-line
at www.yitis.ca May 12 - 14, 2003 Premier is keynote speaker at Meet the North Conference The largest ever Yukon delegation to attend the Meet the North Conference and Exposition from May 12 14 in Edmonton was led by Premier Dennis Fentie, Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor and Council of Yukon First Nations Grand Chief Ed Schultz. The Department of Economic Development in co-operation with first nation governments
and development corporations, chambers of commerce, industry associations and Yukon
companies showcased Yukon at the conference and exposition as a great place to invest, do
