Data and Services

Rock Samples and Diamond Drill Core
NTGO has a large collection of rock samples and diamond drill core in its care. Clients may view these samples and, if approved, take sub-samples for analysis. Drill core of interest can be selected with the aid of a digital catalogue and interactive map (published as NWT Open Report 2003-003). Contact ntgo@gov.nt.ca.

Database of Mineral Showings

The Office maintains a database of mineral showings in the NWT. Specific showings or groups of showings can be selected from this database with the aid of the NORMIN Showing Query, a flexible search tool which offers a variety of reports on the selected mineral showings. A download of key information for all mineral showings in the database is available here. Areas which have not been updated with recently discovered showings or recent exploration results are identified on the introductory map of the Showing Query.

Database of References
NTGO maintains a database of information about literature and unpublished references to geology and mineral exploration in the NWT. This is the NORMIN Reference database, searchable through the NORMIN Reference Query mentioned above. Items described within it include NWT Geoscience Office publications, mineral exploration assessment reports, journal articles, university theses, and publications of scientific associations. Items which are distributed by NTGO can be downloaded directly from NORMIN, or added to a Gateway user shopping cart; click here for instructions on how to use these features. A download of selected metadata for all reference records in the database is available here.

Geological Library
The Northwest Territories Geoscience Office (NTGO) houses a comprehensive Geological Library containing books, journals and government publications, which are accessible to the public. The Library is open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to noon, and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. We provide workspaces with computer and Internet access for our clients. Our Library holdings are not currently searchable on the Internet, but our own publications are searchable through the NORMIN Reference Query (choose a Megatype of Our Publication). We provide free download and Internet ordering through the Gateway Browser and sell our publications in paper or digital form for roughly the cost of the media - contact ntgo@gov.nt.ca.

Archived Assessment Reports
The Office also houses an Archive containing over 4000 mineral exploration Assessment Reports for the NWT, dating from the 1940's to present. These assessment files are stored in a secure room but are available for viewing upon request. Reports of interest can be selected with the aid of the NORMIN Reference Query. NWT reports can be ordered as scanned images or paper photocopies. NWT assessment reports have been scanned and are available for download through the Gateway Reference Browser and NORMIN Reference Query. Click here for instructions on how to use these features .

Raw geophysical and other data submitted by industry in digital format, as well as digitized compilations of kimberlite indicator data, are also available through Gateway.

Gateway: Browsing Our Digital Collection
NTGO provides the Gateway Reference Browser for users to browse through the various reports and maps available for free download. A shopping cart can be used to store individual files from within reports, to select multiple files or reports for download, or to order selections too large to download. Click here for more information about these features.

Standards Development

The Office actively supports development of national geoscience data standards by Canadian Geoscience Knowledge Network (CGKN) working groups.
