This portal is about people.
It’s about the variety of people who work across the departments and
agencies of the Government of Canada. Those who share common work
purposes and functions, and professional interests, belong to what
is known as a Functional Community. Most public servants are members
of at least one. People are important in the delivery of
Results for
Canadians. For this reason, each functional community invests to
ensure a continuous supply of the right people in the right place at
the right time.
In a variety of ways, each functional community helps its members to
meet personal, professional development, or career needs and aspirations.
Those who share a specific concern or personal interest (such as learning)
may decide to work informally together, even with those in other functional
communities, in what is known as a Community of Practice. Functional
communities also support departments and agencies, for example, by sharing
“Best Practices” and coordinating both recruitment programs and
communications. Accordingly, community development work improves the working
environment for people across government.
This portal is for these people. Hopefully it will become known as a source
of useful information on what's happening.
It’s also for other people, those from outside of government, who may be
interested in learning more, perhaps even in seeking employment. Each web
site contains a range of information relevant to any such
considerations.
Recently, functional community leaders have begun to explore their capacity
to work together collectively on matters of mutual interest while continuing
to meet the unique requirements of their members. One of these matters is
their potential role in the implementation of the
Public Service Modernization Act.
This portal is just one of the results of this collective effort.
